I only lasted 55 minutes with Rebirth (I didn’t actually buy it till this year), so I can’t really comment on that.
X4 is pretty good. I mean, a lot of your time is still spent in menus, and on the surface those menus are pretty decent. For example, here is the menu for ship behaviour, and I can see Autotrade, Dock At etc etc. But there’s still a bit of a disconnect between selecting that menu option, and the ship not carrying it out. The reason it’s not doing it is usually pretty opaque, and this early after release it is tempting to blame it on bugs, of which there are a few.
That said, if you managed TC/AP this will be fine. It’s moved almost towards an RTS type map layout, and there are some menus that are driven by ‘left click on your ship and right click on the station you want to assign it to’, for example. The whole difficulty is in making those kind of connections in order to figure out how to get something done.
No real change there then. I remember being absolutely infuriated by TC when I picked the Trader start and immediately did the Flight School. I hit a massive roadblock with the part that goes, ‘Shoot this target’; I tried absolutely everything, and only after an hour did I realise that there were no guns on my ship, so the tutorial was broken.
It’s more of that really
The station building has been improved massively, it is a modular, stick things together, type thing now. And there are some beautiful clear workfows for your goods in production.
