TLDR: Girltrash! All Night Long plays it a bit too safe and lacks edge, but it’s fun if you’re drinking.
It’s like Lesbian La La Land (this comparison is entirely accurate as I have seen the first 20 minutes of La La Land) meets some kind of road trip / zany-night comedy like Wayne’s World or Harold & Kumar.
But it’s not really as zany or outrageous or funny as those comedies, and it’s all a bit too predictable and familiar and lacking in depth or conflict. Everything gets resolved a bit too easily and pretty much as you’d expect.
That’s not to say it’s not a medium amount of fun, and might even be one of those guilty pleasure films that you end up watching more than you’d expect… kind of like a Mortal Kombat or something like that.
In both cases, drinking improves the experience.
Really though, I think a lot of the enjoyment comes from recognizing various actors from other works who pop up (The L Word, South of Nowhere, etc…). It’s kind of a fan movie for fans of those, and the original web series, and if you don’t know those actors or aren’t invested in those characters then it might hold less appeal.
FWIW, the original web series, despite being clearly lower budget, felt a bit more raw and less polished, and I think I almost preferred that (it’s very short and free so I’d definitely watch it first).
It wasn’t a musical though.
On the plus side, my kids have been obsessed with The Greatest Showman and so I’ve had ‘This is the greatest show!’ stuck in my head all week. But now I have ‘Don’t shit on my dreams!’ stuck in my head, which is possibly an improvement
