Personally, I’m not sure they got all those beats spot on, although it’s true that somewhere in there they did mostly tell the story of the hobbit.
The mountain giants, goblin town and bjorn seemed a bit rubbish to me.
I mean, if you edited all the crap cgi action scenes out of Goblin Town then it might be ok, but as it is it’s a video game of almost as little weight as the horrendous barrels sequence.
I think these videos did a good job of explaining why the narrative structure of the hobbit (multiple disconnected side adventures to be read in independent chapters to kids each night) might not quite work for a movie, but their solution (burying those points in all the mush that they added) wasn’t the right one.
Bjorn felt like a massive anti-climax, but I’m not sure if that was a weakness with the scene, or just because it was de-emphasized so much by all the junk around it.
Hmm. Now I really want to watch that fan edit to see if simply removing some of the other scenes alters how I perceive the remaining ones.
Simply by showing the entire battle of Five Armies, they altered the whole emphasis and pacing of the book. In the book, things like Smaug dying are basically the climax… where as in the movies they happen half way through… because there’s still a 2 hour battle, plus Tauriel stuff, etc… to go through.
that’s the one… it was probably your post that put me onto it in the first place. I just wish there was a download that was smaller than 10gb!
Did you ever watch the 2 hour edit that you mentioned? How did that compare?
I have really no interest in seeing this as the series has been tired since they started making sequels.
I did watch the 4th one last year on TV, and it was rather dull. Focusing on Jack is a mistake imho, as he works quite well in small doses and as comic relief, but doesn’t really work as the main protagonist.
He was a nice surprise in the first one, but that one was mainly about Orlando and Kiera. Even if Orlando was a bit dull, those 2 worked better as the main protagonists than Jack ever did.
Also, personally, I wish they’d dump Geoffrey Rush. Not that he’s bad, but just because it’s dumb that they keep bringing back Barbossa in more and more credibility-straining ways and unnecessary ways. His story was basically finished in movie #1, and for some reason he keeps popping back up. Kill your darlings.
