Primer and Coherence
We’ve watched both movies in direct succession in the night without knowing beforehand anything or much about them. Suffice to say their premises are quite similar; both film-technically and also plotwise.
Technically, both movies were made on a really tight budget. That doesn’t harm really because those movies don’t even pretend to be playing in the AAA league.
Plotwise they’re similar in that they’re sci fi tackling the notion of alternate realities and cause-effect.
See, I didn’t spoil much
As to how did I like them… I confess I couldn’t grasp entirely Primer. It kinda went slightly beyond my comprehension skills. Still, I found it refreshing and I recommend it. I didn’t find it hipsteresque, though; I can imagine that hipsters could claim Primer for themselves but that’s not necessarily the movie’s fault.
I found Coherence to be more “coherent” as regarding plot logic. But that is probably due to the story being easier to understand. Also, it was heartwarming to see believable human reactions in a movie.
As opposed to … drums beating …
I switched off this shit in the last third of the movie. What really killed me was the total lack of plausibility how the protagonists act/react. The premises were promising but, alas, the movie makers didn’t leave out a single worn off cliché.
Just short note re Looper
It’s an action movie with a slight flavour of Shyamalan. If you approach the movie from that angle it’s an acceptable pastime. It’s not really a movie being worth watching as sci fi material, though.
