So - in the name of curiousity I just throw 10TP onto my laptop (spare HDD) and it’s - well - it’s - erm…
I suppose if I were sitting on 7 (which I am - mostly) and wondering about an upgrade, it’s more appealing that 8 ever was. The Metro thing has been relegated from an illogical (to a desktop user) desktop alternative to being ‘the start menu’ - the ‘hidden’ app list below it seems to be gone entirely.
Of course if I was on 8 (as I am on my tablet) I’d wonder why - instead of moving closer to being a halfway competent touch-based version of Windows - they’re moving AWAY from that!!!
One of the things which irked me about 8 was the way things like the Control Panel were ‘hidden’ but they were required for most of the things you’d want to do - the 8 ‘settings’ pages contained a fraction of the things you’d care about. The other thing which 8 didn’t do was support touch all-that-well - stuff you take for granted on mobiles (wiping out a whole input field, selecting text etc.) just isn’t there - the onscreen keyboard is clumsy and unintuitive etc. etc. - and here that’s no better it seems.
There’s a lot of ‘mobile phone’ about the new “jewels” (or whatever they call the popup to control WiFi and other aspects of the PC) of course - just not sure desktop users need it.
I’ll get Steam on here now and see what it fucks up but first thought is it’s more 7 than 8 and I guess that’s down to the enormous amount of people who stayed on 7!!
