I agree with most of your post, but the idea that google would let a program stagnate and eventually abandon development on it is their MO. They’ve taken a repeated drubbing in the tech press for three to five years now for their inability to maintain software and features. This is the company that can’t get chat right and keep it consistent, which was solved a quarter of a century ago, with Instant Messenger.
I could see them coming up with four replacements for Chrome centered around a gimmick each of which have 95% of the the features of the original. Then they cancel two and merge the other two into Chrome, creating a bloated, jerry-rigged monster that no one wants to maintain. They then make another 4 Chrome alternatives.
