Refurb is okay as long as you trust the seller. I would have no trouble recommending Amazon’s refurb as long as the price is right.
Amazon does grade the items according to their status, however if you’re not happy with what you get, you can simply send it back within 30 days.
They also honor the warranty as if new, AFAIK, meaning if stuff breaks within 2 years you get your money back.
What I was talking about, was folks peddling their own wares on FleaBay and the likes.
That WAS a problem with AMD, the 290X is a very outdated card at this point.
The 5800 is definitely a very good card, but good luck finding one.
The 1050 series was meant basically as an upgrade for pre-builts. The 1070 Ti / 1080 would be a massive upgrade.
Alternatively, you might be looking at the 2060 / 2070 / 2070 Super. The 2070 is roughly comparable with a 1080 but has some ray tracing capabilities. The 2060 is also more than decent at 1080p. The 2070 Super is a cut-down 2080, in essence.
At 1080p it is definitely possible the CPU is the bottleneck, I did have some dips with Skyrim in certain settings because the shadows run entirely on the CPU, is my belief.
What you need is a data logger that keeps track of CPU / GPU usage while you’re playing.
Then you go back and check: do you have low GPU load and the CPU is pegged at 100% ? Then it may be a CPU problem.
