As the forums here appear to be going the way of the dodo, just noting of more or less finishing off of Babylon 5 - Crusade (with only the last episode remaining).
When I watched this last, it was on TV for the first time and I HATED IT. Back then, it was because it didn’t feel like Babylon 5. It didn’t have people like Londo and J’Kar on there, there was no shadows or vorlons, or some big baddie. And there was no real big thing going on, in an on going manner in it.
Well it’s been almost 2 decades since then and with more mature eyes, and with a corrected episode order in hand (as the show was televised out of order on TV), had a FAR better experience overall. So if your even considering watching the show yourself you need to make sure the episodes are ordered in the following:
Ep 00 - Call to Arms (movie)
Ep 01 - War Zone
Ep 02 - The Long Road
Ep 03 - Ruling From the Tomb
Ep 04 - Appearances and Other Deceits
Ep 05 - The Memory of War
Ep 06 - The Needs of Earth
Ep 07 - Racing the Night
Ep 08 - Visitors From Down the Street
Ep 09 - Each Night I Dream of Home
Ep 10 - The Path of Sorrows
Ep 11 - Patterns of the Soul
Ep 12 - The Well of Forever
Ep 13 - The Rules of the Game
So, having now rewatched it, is it a bad show - Hell no. Is it a good one - Yes. Is it a great show - No. Cast is great, there is some genuinely good episodes in there. The problem is that it is filler heavy, or to be more specific more like Star Trek Voyager, in that there is little to no connection between most of the episodes. And that’s very different to the main B5 series which went more space opera direction of all the episodes flowing into the next. It also has zero big events happen at all. None of the cast die, Earth doesn’t get saved (maybe in the final episode?), and nothing happens of major consequence.
B5 in comparison had A LOT of major stuff happening all the time, with a bit of filler here and there. It’s certainly a hell of a lot better than the “Legend of the Rangers” proposed series. Another negative is that none of races from the main B5 series are in it. Races I for one really wanted to know about in how they were, considering that the show is set 5 years after the end of B5. You see a heap of random new ones. But none of the old.
So overall if the show had kept going, back then when it released I likely would have hated it. Where as nowadays I’d have enjoyed it, as the rewatching of it present day was quite good. It just doesn’t have much links to the main series, and it often feels like Star Trek Voyager or Next Generation, as their constantly going off to new planets, meeting new races etc. But very little of the time are they actually looking for a cure for Draak virus, which is the entire reason they were sent out. And you only see the main bad guys, the “Draak” in 2 out of the 13 episodes. Dayam.
If you’ve not watched or enjoyed Babylon 5 the main series, then stay away. If you did enjoy it, then it makes for a good curiosity, if watched in the correct episode order. Having a technomage as a regular, was certainly interesting, as you don’t see technomages in many things. Normal magic ones in fantasy stuff sure, but not in sci-fi.
Final episode (which wasn’t the final intended episode of the season since the show got cancelled mid-season) was pretty good. Nothing earth shattering, but good. Show ended on a positive.
