I could have sworn B5 came out before DS9, but I will defer to the knowledge of wikipedia.
I wonder if it beat DS9 to the punch in the UK? Or maybe it’s just my faulty memory.
Surprising tidbit that caught my eye:
In the United Kingdom, the show aired every week on Channel 4 without a break, with the result that the last four or five episodes of the early seasons screened in the UK before the US. Babylon 5 was one of the better-rated US television shows on Channel 4, and achieved high audience Appreciation Indexes, with the season 4 episode “Endgame” achieving the rare feat of beating the prime-time soap operas for first position.
I’m kinda surprised it had that wide an appeal, as it seems to have faded from popular consciousness much more than something like Star Trek. (Though of course that has a much wider longer history).
Also noted that:
In November 2020 a remastered version of the show in 4:3 format was released to the iTunes Store and Amazon Prime Video. This version uses the original negatives for filmed elements, and algorithmically upscales the digitally created elements to HD resolution with fewer visual artifacts, for a more visually consistent presentation. In January 2021, it was made available for streaming on HBO Max.
Which is maybe good, because when they did the DVD versions they screwed up the SFX by switching the live-action stuff to widescreen when the SFX was only in 4:3. It sucks for me because I own the entire series on DVD
Maybe I’ll see if I can try the remastered version and see if the AI upscaling is decent or horrible.
I feel like the thing that has aged the most might be some of the costumes and set dressing. I remember the Minbari having a lot of weird silk robes and curtains…
I think I saw most of the movies after finishing the show, because I’m not sure they were aired and I think I only saw them on DVD later.
I also remember Crusade being rubbish. Didn’t know there was another spin-off.
I feel like the main mistake they made was re-writing to bring in new characters when actors left, rather than just re-casting the original roles, Dario Naharis style. It might have been jarring for a few episodes to get a new Ivanova or someone, but people would get used to it quicker, and it’d have allowed them to finish some of their plot arcs more satisfyingly.
I want to watch it now, but no way I have time to get into the entire show! Maybe I’ll try the Freespace mod instead.
