Finished both seasons of Impulse:
Boy, I really need to learn to be careful what I wish for. Good grief that ending was dark and depressing. (Barring one tiny glimmer of light right near the end).
Seems like they were planning/hoping for a 3rd season. Season 2 actually does wrap up a fair number of threads pretty well, but also teases a few new ones that will clearly never happen now.
While the dark ending is mostly in keeping with the show, and actually works reasonably well as an end to the entire thing, I can’t help but think it’s a bit of a mid-show ending, aiming to make everything darkest before the dawn and that next season would have been partly about putting things back together.
So, if you’re in the market for a ‘superhero’ show that’s not really about superheroes/superpowers at all, but more about trauma and pain and broken people screwing up their lives and the lives of those around them, it’s pretty good. It’s generally very well written, shot, acted, and has (imho) some great tunes.
It focuses much more on small personal stories, and pretty much every character has deep believable motivations and reasons for their issues.
My favorite part was probably the relationship between the (kinda) step-sisters. They start off basically hating each other, and end up… well… . But in between they have some really nice moments where they grow together and end up helping each other… at first due to circumstance and later due to actually wanting to.
As such, I think the season 2 prom episode was probably my favorite. In the middle of the season before everything went to shit.
Don’t watch it if you’re feeling depressed though, and trigger warning for sexual assault.
It’s nuts that it’s supposedly based on the same YA novels that Jumper was, though reading the synopsis of the novel, they appear to have changed absolutely everything.
