I’ve become unexpectedly hooked on Normal People.
It’s very compelling, although I’m not 100% sure why.
I mean, it’s very well acted and atmospherically shot and scored, with a great soundtrack… so I guess that’s why… but it’s not my usual kind of thing. It’s basically about 2 somewhat fucked up people continually fucking up their relationship (while also fucking a lot).
I regularly find myself wanting to reach into the screen and shake one of them as they unnecisarily screw things up, but they’re portrayed in such believable ways that it doesn’t come across as the usual ‘rom com misunderstanding for the sake of misunderstanding’.
Not finished the series yet, so I hope it holds together.
I also really hope they don’t try and drag it out for a second season.
I also tried Stargirl because I spotted the graphic for it and thought ‘that looks a bit weird, it might be interesting’. Based off the first episode, it’s not very interesting.
Superhero origin episodes are often dull, but this was very dull. It also didn’t really feature the main character very much.
I guess the opening being about the classic golden age Justice Society with people like Wildcat and Dr Mid-nite could have been kinda interesting, but was just kinda dull and cgi-weird. The mix of humour seems a bit odd too. Is it supposed to be a comedy?
I dunno, maybe it’ll settle down and pick up in later episodes, but I’m not sure I’ll get there to find out.
Well, I finished all of Normal People. Not sure on the very final ending, as it felt like an artificial way to set up another season.
Other than that, I really enjoyed it.
I went back and finished episode 1 of Stargirl as I felt bad abut judging it based on half an episode. The second half has a bit more of the titular character, and more action, though it’s still a pretty by-the-numbers origin episode.
All in all, it feels like it’s going for the Supergirl vibe of lightweight comedy heroics with drama mixed in, but with a bit more of a CW teen vibe.
It feels rather over-familiar if you’ve watched any syfy or CW teen hero shows. It’s not as interesting as Cloak & Dagger, despite the main character looking weirdly similar.
