Finished Swamp Thing 's one-and-only season.
It’s half pretty good. I like a lot of the main cast. The main doctor does a good job selling a tricky role. Will Patton is great as a slimy but not 100% bad bad guy.
It starts off really well as a dark, foreboding, dripping-with-atmosphere horror thriller.
The problem is that it doesn’t really have anywhere to go, and it gets a bit tangled up (in vines) and trips over itself a bit at the end. I’m not sure how much of that is due to being cancelled, and how much was just part of the plan.
It introduces a bunch of side plots/characters that seem like they were meant to go somewhere and then mostly peter out. The ending manages to do lots of theoretically dramatic things, but still end up kinda anti-climatic.
There was the really weird side plot with blue devil. I assume he’s a comic book character, but it just came across as really weird that they spent a fair amount of time building him up, but not as the main character, and then he just appeared, did one thing, and then left.
I assume he’d have come back into later seasons, but it just felt like they felt compelled to include him because he’s in the comics or something.
I think the main problem is inherent in the main character. Swamp Thing looks cool, but there’s not a lot you can do with him. Most of big finale doesn’t even involve him. All he gets to do is kill a bunch of mercs in the swamp… which he’s already done about 5 times.
Due to the way he looks, he can’t really interact with anyone. He doesn’t have a secret identity, so he can’t come into town. (They did a reasonable job with his kinda ‘romance’, but it’s always gonna be a bit weird and very hard to pull off. I kinda wish they’d gone for it a bit more though. )
So he’s basically stuck in the swamp… where he’s basically unbeatable, so there’s not a lot of drama there either.
