I think Cavil has found his dream role ie a supremely attractive man who is too matinee idol good looking not to get casted for stuff but not very good at acting. For all that I love the Witcher series Geralts character is basically an exposure of the absurdities of injustice, prejudice and hypocrisy, and then a response of existential resignation, violent retribution or pointing and tutting, laced with an intermittent laconic wit and epicurean appetite for fucking. I get the feeling that Cavil doesn’t even need to work to “assume” such a character but regardless, hes extremley good at the above. Hes basically doing what he always does except the role is built around him doing it. As long as Geralt is without relationships or a community ie the classic man with no name wanderer type, I think it will work. Suspect Cavil will be tested when it gets into Yen and Ciri territory.
It’s an interesting show, I’m enjoying it. I think the longer and harder it leans into not being the next GOT or something big budget the better it will be. It feels quite old fashioned, like I can imagine it being made in 1998 or something, given the amount of assumed pressure such a big license brings with it its really not a 2010’s streaming content binge showstopper. It dosent give a shit about being particularly clear or comprehensible (of all the series to not include a map at some point in its credits or what have you), like if you dont know what a kikkimore is or where Cintra is at then fuck you, but again I find that quite affectionate, it’s that old early Games Workshop or Terry Pratchett style irrepressible enthusiasm for its subject matter when people could get excited about fiction without turning into Incels or whatever. There was the assumption that if you liked it you would enjoy what there and build your knowledge over time. It’s not that sort of cynical Marvel (Disney I guess) continuity which is like if you want to understand this go watch 100 things, make it your religion DO IT NOW more the bookish kind of “look it up, or just ignore it and go with the flow” quality.
I am enjoying it doubling down into the source materials essential social justice motifs, and its casting makes a mockery of the idea that White= necessary and authentic because Poland. Also thankful because I think it will piss people off who like the series for the wrong reasons. Excellent fights too.
