Having been a PC gamer for quite sometime, like many of you I suspect, I’ve collected quite a pile of discs from back when I still bought stuff from games stores and later on Amazon etc. Alas the time has finally come where I just need to free up some space and get rid of the discs. But what to do with them?
I was thinking of just chucking the box load up on eBay for £30-£40 or something as a pickup only. The problem is, a good few of the games I know just will not install from disk any more. Not because the disk is scratched, but because they’re just that old and computer says no. Also in many cases I’ve used the keys already to add them to my Steam account etc. Some of the disks are for now long defunct MMO’s, such as Saga of Ryzom, Matrix Online, City of Hero’s, Horizons etc. So really these disks, I suspect would only be of interest to those who collect physical games media. I don’t think anyone’s going to be wanting these to actually install and play them, or maybe I’m wrong.
Whilst it does pain me a little bit to part with them, as it’s a bit of my gaming history there, I don’t really view them in the same way as my CD or DVD and VHS disks and tapes. You don’t need to install patches to get them to run properly, you just pop them in the player, press play and they work. PC games disks on the other hand, even when they were new, especially the later games, required patches on first install and a good few even required Steam accounts to install them, which kind of made the whole point of buying the game on disc somewhat void.
I don’t have the shelf space to display them and they live in that box, in a cupboard, underneath some other boxes. I still own a good many of them digitally, so time to say good bye to the disks. So it’s either punt them up on eBay and see if someone wants to come and take the lot off me or it’s a trip to the tip unfortunately. I’m hardly the first who’s had to do this, so what’s everyone else done?
