I recently finished Angela Carter’s Nights at the Circus.
Shamefully, apart from to Kill a Mocking Bird in school; the only book by a female author that I’ve chosen to read, and that just won’t do.
I’m fairly interested in Margaret Atwood, maybe Ursula le Guin but I’m not that into fantasy. Can anyone give me any clues as to who I could look for books by next? Here comes my wanky list of things I like!
Books I have enjoyed -
Nights at the Circus, Keep the Aspidistra Flying, The Wind Up Bird Chronicle, Pulp, The Trial, The Illustrated Man, Brave New World, The Outsider/The Stranger, Nausea, Blood Meridian, Naked Lunch, the Master and Margarita, Galapagos, High-Rise etc
Anything that’s not too heavy on the purple prose (unless it’s southern gothic maybe) and can stand up next to a book about a six foot brick shithouse bird woman aerialist.
