I’m trying to get back into the Witcher novel I was half way through. He doesn’t make it easy by constantly switching viewpoints and situations.
I mean, it’s a fantasy trope to do that, eg Song of Ice and Fire books switch protagonists each chapter. But here he does it 10 times within a chapter, often nested recursively, and then the next chapter will jump to an entirely new character in a new situation and their viewpoint, and then mix 5 viewpoints together in that chapter, and then 2 chapters later we’ll get back to one of the recursively nested viewpoints from 3 chapters before.
I actually think it’d work quite well as a TV show though, because the viewpoint/situation switching is much more a staple of TV/Movies and is a lot clearer on screen.
I’m still not sure about the fact that Geralt has been on a pointless quest for 2 books, making no progress and getting pointlessly side tracked, and now other characters (Looking at you Yennefer!) are explicitly pointing out that he’s going to achieve nothing and go off and get bogged down in pointless things.
Talk about undermining your (supposed) main character and narrative.
