I got the 3 months for $1 xbox game pass ultimate (or whatever bollocks it is called) deal, mainly for the kids to play Human Fall Flat.
Then I noticed it had No Man’s Sky on it, which has never been reduced particularly cheap, so I thought this was a great chance to try it. I’ve been interested in it for ages mainly because of the lovely art style and the idea of exploring all these alien worlds and also flying around planets.
(With the two caveats that my system is probably below minimum requirements, but seems to be able to mostly run the game on lowest settings; and that I’m having to use a gamepad because of RSI).
First impressions are mystifyingly shit. Does this game want me not to like it?
I thought NMS was a first person game, but it seems to be 3rd person, and it seems to have incredibly crap controls (at least on gamepad). It also seems to have menus designed by an insane sadist. I spent ages navigating slowly around the horrible menus trying to find a first-person view toggle, but couldn’t seem to find one.
So it starts me on an alien world, with some weird flora and fauna, and then immediately subjects me to a toxic environment that is melting my suit, which leads to visual effects that blur my vision etc… Which means my first 40 minutes of the game are running around in a panic trying to find resources with a blurry screen and unable to stop and take in any of the vistas, landscapes, weird animals, etc…
Some ships scream overhead sometimes, but I can’t take the time to stop and watch them or work out what they are.
I can’t jump in my ship and fly around yet because I have to complete a 20 part fetch quest to get all the parts.
The ‘hold button down for 3 seconds to do anything’ thing is really annoying. The fact that to collect all the resources you have to run up to them, then look down at the ground, then hold X makes it really frustrating to collect 12 plants that are close together, and it means you spend most of your time looking at the ground rather than getting to see any of the scenery.
At one point I was running along and suddenly died. I have no idea why. I think it was something toxic… either the rain or some plant, but since the entire game had been warnings about toxicity, and I seemed to be on about half health, I don’t know what happened.
Then I had to run back to my corpse to get my gear?! Is this everquest?
Then I wanted to quit but the game warned me it was 18 minutes since my last autosave, but there seemed to be no way to actually save. WTF.
The game might actually be good in there, but it’s by far the worst introduction to any game I’ve ever played… and that includes the infinity engine games.
