Went back to Star Traders: Frontiers because despite my 900+ hours of gameplay I have never been able to get a Captain to survive past the 2nd Era (read as: major storyline evolution).
Now, I love the Trese Brothers but one of my only gripes in the game is that there is a major spike in RNG difficulty near the conclusion of the first Era.
Essentially you run a major risk of encountering a Xeno ship before you have managed to level a Navigator character up tot he point where they get the “avoid this encounter entirely” skill called Skip Off The Void.
Unless you have played one of 2 very particular builds these encounters are fatal. The ships are near impossible to get away from, their weapons are vastly better than what you can buy, and even if you follow the major combat builds the boarding fights are at beat a 60/40 chance of survival (and you must get through multiple of these fights to leave the encounter!).
During my 900+ hours of play, this point has ended in the perma-death of at LEAST 70 of my captains resulting in a game-over. Basically if you are playing as a Merchant, an Explorer, a Spy etc (anything other than a Xeno/ship combat build) it is the equivalent of the GM just handing you a TPK and laughing about it.
You could of course drop the game difficulty to disallow perma-death but that is just straight cheating.
Moving to try Satisfactory next. Mostly out of frustration.
