It is extremely linear - what few choices I’ve made don’t seem to have had any notable consequence beyond being told a few lines of dialogue that I assume would be slightly altered, or just getting X amount of reward money rather than Y amount.
I don’t know whether I’m imagining it or maybe it’s just that I’ve moved to a different area, but the update did seem to smooth out some of the camera shonkiness.
Cannot praise the visuals and music enough. The little scripted moments, like approaching the end of a walkway and seeing a building partially collapse and come to rest on the building next to it, are beautifully animated.
So far, I have risked dysentery by consuming faux-cherries of unknown origin, had a conversation with a Yahoo Serious lookalike that rapidly became about cultural appropriation, encountered a falcon called Norman, noticed what I think was a Deus Ex reference, and had a surprising conversation about something that made me grin and go “Hang on, I’ve still got one of those in my attic!”.
There are some issues with the UI and HUD though. The minimap is so close to the corners of the screen that the numbers indicating the distance of map markers can get cut off at said edges, and there are no scaling options in the menu.
See? They’re just out of sight until you rotate them back by facing another direction. It happens at the right hand side of the screen too, but it’s more pronounced at the lower edge.
Note also the fuel can indicator above the minimap; it diminishes in two ways - over time with travel, or when you crash into something. But refuelling and repairing damage are two different values handled seperately at two different establishments, and there’s no level of damage indicator. I did see some cracks start to appear in the car windows, haven’t let the damage get bad enough to see how bad the thing can look, but still, a seperate bar and some percentages would be nice.
It could do with an option to have quest details fade from the screen after acquisition instead of being ever present, but I suppose that would require the addition of a quest journal. Actually, just a toggle HUD would be welcome.
The controls indicator pop-up at the start of the game (whether it be game pad or WASD, I have checked both now) doesn’t tell you that there is a seperate map screen, and I was three hours in before I discovered it in the controls menu.
See? No map button listed there on either.
Which brings me to another point; Why the fuck bringing up the menu or map doesn’t pause the game is an issue. If for any reason you’re altering the few settings there are, the game continues to run and other vehicles plow into you from multiple directions.
Also, and this is only a minor quibble but it baffles me nonetheless:
Oh, and the merchants. There is no description of what the items they sell actually do, until after you’ve already spent money on them and look at them in your inventory screen. Is this a side quest item, or a consumable? No sod knows until after they’ve forked out for it.
