Well, I haven’t really made much progress with the games I’ve mentioned previously, with the exception of Dex that I did finish and enjoyed just as much as the first time.
The main reason for that is Neverwinter Nights 2 : Mask of the Betrayer. I’ve just finished my first playthrough of it and absolutely loved the story, it was as good as others had led me to believe. Mind you, this wasn’t my first try with this game but my previous attempts always ended with me more frustrated than anything. I can identify two reasons for that : one is the combat which I really just don’t enjoy here for some reason, the other is that the area you begin in ( a barrow ) is just not that great and the story takes a bit too long to get going.
I’m glad I finally managed to push past my frustrations and really just focus on the fascinating tale I was experiencing. This is also one of few RPGs where the evil path is actually really well done and you can go quite far in indulging your character’s wickedness. Suffice to say, my lawful evil character did not go that far as he did have a code of conduct he strictly adhered to but it was tempting, no doubt about it.
I’m also playing Icewind Dale Enhanced Edition, the only game of the Infinity Engine era that I never experienced. I’m really enjoying my time with it so far, it reminds me why I loved these games so much back in the day, there’s just something about them that I’ve never quite found replicated in their more modern counterparts, even those directly inspired by them. It also really makes me want to replay both Baldur’s Gate’s as well as Planescape Torment but I just don’t have the time for them all…
Last but not least, I’ve started playing Black Mesa. I’ve been waiting so long for this one and when they announced this wasn’t the final version, I was almost tempted to wait some more but I just couldn’t. They really did an impressive job from what I’ve seen so far. Looking forward to discover the rest, especially Xen.
