Still enjoying Tomb Raider: Legend.
It’s weird, I love exploration and puzzle solving games like portal, but I never really thought of Tomb Raider like that. The puzzle dungeons are great.
The combat interludes are often too much, with too many enemies to take on and the best tactic being just jumping around like a crazy bunny holding down the trigger. (They have tried to make the combat a bit tactical and tomb-raiderish by allowing you to grapple enemies or target environmental features to damage them, but in practice they’re usually too fiddly to pull off when under fire from 8 hitscan enemies and the rewards aren’t worth the damage you take in the process.
I’m enjoying it as a cheesy satire, but the story and acting are weird. They’ve clearly put a fair amount of work (for the time) into the voicework and characters, but it’s just so over the top that you can’t take it remotely seriously.
It’s also clear that Lara is seriously psychopathic.
I think they’ve tried to mitigate the old tomb raider issue of her destroying ancient temples and slaughtering endangered animals by having the voiceover comment on how unfortunate it is… but then that kinda makes it worse because they acknowledge it’s bad and just keep doing it.
The scene where Lara breaks into the apartment of a Yakuza gangster to steal an artifact is disturbing when you consider that after breaking in to his appartment and killing about 50 guards, she’s making jokes about how it’s his fault for not just giving her the antique that she coveted. I feel like she’s the bad guy.
