Does anyone else get weird impulses to play particular games, regardless of how good they are or what other options you have available.
I had the smart idea to reorganise my games library by How Much I Want To Play the games.
I sorted about 20 games into the ‘Must Play’ category, including a number of supposed classics and amazing games.
(Side Note: I still think this is a good idea).
Then I looked at that list, and really wanted to play Blood Bowl and Tomb Raider: Legend.
(Which were not on that list).
When I get such impulses, they often subside quickly. I install the game, play it for 30 minutes, and then remember why it wasn’t such a great idea.
Too early to tell yet if Blood Bowl will go that way. I have a deep love for the tabletop game, but the video game just never seems quite as fun or satisfying as it should be. Still, I had kinda fun getting stomped by some orcs while remembering how easy it is to screw up and trying to remember what advantages dwarves are supposed to have.
But Tomb Raider: Legend is a weird one. I remember playing either Legend, Anniversary or Underworld when it first came out and hating it. I don’t remember which one it was because I didn’t get very far.
I don’t entirely remember why I hated it, but I remember annoying combat, annoying people in my ear, and not liking the movement.
So it comes as somewhat of a surprise that I’m really enjoying Legend.
I think I got the urge to play it simply from wanting some more ledge-jumping as I’m nearly done with Submerged. I probably should have picked an Assassin’s Creed game instead…
The controls are actually pretty good, so I’m not sure why I hated them. The combat is still terrible, and the voice-comms assistants are still annoying, but the stuff with the environment and tombs is pretty great so far. (early days).
Bit worried there might be too much combat.
I even kinda enjoyed the quicktime events… maybe because I haven’t encountered them for so long that they actually felt kinda fresh again.
It still looks pretty nice. The plot still seems a bit naff, Lara still seems happy to kill 100s of endanged species and rival grave robbers, and the camera still seems to manage to focus on her boobs at every opportunity… but I’m just finding all that kinda cheesy fun and ignoring it in favor of jumping around tombs and solving puzzles with big stone cogs.
Color me surprised.
