I have started up DOOM today. So far, I’m not terribly impressed. It’s fast and I’m receiving quite a lot of damage even on Normal difficulty, so that’s good. But visually it seems somewhat cluttered - at least in some areas - and the speed of gameplay also makes it kind of hard to be impressed by any visuals. In spite of its hardware requirements it feels like a game which doesn’t actually profit from the technically advanced engine all that much.
The glory kill system seems to work well enough, but occasionally it will slow down things and it just feels weird how I’m basically doing a variation of a small cutscene so often even though I’m actually playing a shooter which mostly should be about shooting things.
Other than that there are a few too many menus, upgrade screens etc. Too much of the story background is locked away in menus. It feels a little messy, a little fiddly. There are robots where weapon mods can be unlocked, but most of the upgrades have to be handled through the menus. Hard Reset on the other hand had a central place for all the upgrades with no requirement for any menus.
90 minutes in I’m starting to like it more, but I’m still feeling like the whole thing is a little too smooth, a little too arcadey in terms of combat and presentation. And a little too bright and “fun” in spite of the corpses everywhere. Doom 3 could be cheesy as well, but that game was much darker and much slower. DOOM on the other hand is just a shooter. All the gore feels pointless.
