Still greatly enjoying HL: Opposing Force.
It’s a bit weird how it differs from my memories. That said, I’ve never played it before, so the memories are from HL1, so I’m never entirely sure they apply. I’m also playing it at a much higher resolution, and Opposing Force has hi-def (for the time) models. I’m also playing in widescreen with a wider FOV.
I’ve been having issues with the crosshairs, which I don’t remember at all from HL1.
The auto-aim was really bugging me, the crosshairs ‘lock-on’ to enemies, which I don’t remember being a thing and feels really weird. For the longest time I thought it was some kind of ‘smart gun’ that OF had added. Now I’ve just turned it off in the menu and things feel instantly better.
The crosshairs are also really hard to see. I guess it’s the resolution, but they’re tiny, and the colors often merge in with the backgrounds. I had a brief go at downloading modded ones, but it didn’t work.
Given the name and the premise, it’s weird that they don’t seem to have gone for the ‘Sheppard is a bad guy(?)’ thing at all. The marines are the bad guys in HL1, but in this they’re all nice and it’s just the ‘other’ marines in black who are the bad guys. I expected they’d start you off being asked to do questionable things and have you rebel or something.
Pacing seems a bit odd. I just unlocked about 4 Alien / High End weapons in a very short time. They all seem somewhat overpowered as well. At least 2 of them seem to be basically one-shot-killers for all organic enemies. A big boss-type monster teleported in and I shot him and vanished him with one shot before he could fire a shot. It felt so weird that I wondered if I’d teleported him or something.
There seems to be a HD textures mod, but tbh I’ve adjusted really quickly to the graphics level and so it looks great without.
