I still really like Bad North, but it does seem to suffer a lot from sudden cascading failure. One slip can cause you to lose a unit, and if you lose a unit near the start of a battle you may well lose more.
A few islands after my previous mess up, I went into an island with pretty much full strength, but one mispositioning got my warriors slaughtered by enemy ‘big dudes’. Which then meant my archers had no protection and I lost 3 units in about 20 seconds. Game over.
That said, it does give you some ways to mitigate losses. You can theoretically have a unit grab a longboat and escape… but the loss came so quick that it didn’t seem worth it.
I think there’s also an ‘abandon island’ button in the menu, but I don’t know the implications of that.
You can also pick up new (lowest level) commanders pretty regularly.
On the plus side, it has checkpoints even if they are pretty far apart, and this wipe came only a few islands after one, so I could restart there. (Unfortunately, as i mentioned in the last post, that checkpoint came just after messing up and losing a commander.)
This time it’s going a lot better, but I do worry that the entire thing is a bit too ‘sudden death’.
Can’t stop playing it though.
I finished VVVVV!
I don’t know what I expected Celeste to be, but what I got wasn’t it. Admittedly I only played for a very short time, but nothing about it grabbed me. The first conversation with the old woman was irritating, the graphics weren’t great (though better than VVVV of course ), and the first level was rather dull, and implied the entire game was going to be about air-dashing.
Everyone did love it though. I should probably give it more time… but who has time these days?
I haven’t played Ori, but I imagine the lovely looks would make me give it more time.
I probably haven’t played any bad platformers as they’d probably irritate me and I’d give up quick.
I mostly agree on Rime. I’d picked up on the metaphor, so I wasn’t too down on the ending, but i just found the metaphor somewhat depressing by the end, and felt the game was never quite as good as it could have been. It was also way too long.
