yeah. I wonder if it’s sound. I don’t remember the original well enough, but in Anomaly silencers do have different levels of sound dampening (assault rifle silencers don’t dampen as much as pistol ones, for example). Or the death sound from the first enemy you kill, perhaps.
RIght. In Anomaly, you have to cross under the bridge; the fences to the sides go all the way to the map edges. But if I come from the North, I can usually sneak up on the guy on top of the bridge (he sometimes looks to the sides, so he can spot me visually, but it never seems to be caused by sound).
If there are more soldiers below, they don’t always seem to get alerted by his death, I think, but they usually are.
… hm. I wonder if squads automatically get alerted if one member dies. That might be, in which case it’s kind of hopeless, because, unless they move somewhere (so you can see if they’re together), there’s no way to tell if you’re looking at a squad or multiple single spawns.
I came from the South last night and killed the guy on the bridge from very far away with a silenced sniper rifle and that sometimes seems to work, though again, I don’t know if he was in a squad. But if you’re far enough away, they seem to go into a kind of mid-level alertness (even with the most high powered sniper rifles, you practically never get one shot kills on higher level military/mercs/Monolith, so they have time to get alerted); they look around and crouch down, but apparently they don’t have enough information to start seeking you out. That takes a lot of distance, though.
It’s a pain to work with, really. Just finding the right file can take a very long time, and right now I can’t find the view settings at all, but I’m guessing that setting definitely is not any lower than in SoC. Nothing is easier in Anomaly…
It’s odd, though. A couple of days ago I was going to the Northern checkpoint in Cordon and ran into a bandit standing by a tree. It was during a heavy rainstorm, and I was crouching, but he didn’t have his back to me and he still didn’t spot me. He was wearing black so I only spotted him because Hip took him out, but that was first when we were within ten meters of him or so (his body had his main weapon on it, so he hadn’t even been alerted before he was killed). No bushes or any cover at all between him and us.
And then at other times, you get spotted from 200 meters away, while crouching and in a heavy rainstorm.
I kind of suspect the engine is just flaky enough that it isn’t really possible to mod things so they always work. I think it would have been done by now otherwise (maybe the OpenXR project will be able to fix it eventually, but it probably isn’t easy).
There was a thread in the Anomaly forum by someone who’d gotten stealth to work very well. Unfortunately he’d only tested stealth, so he’d broken normal AI behaviour.
Edit: ALSO, I just remembered a game I had a couple of days ago where I tried spawning as a Monolith (you can choose faction in Anomaly), made it to Zaton (Zlaton? The starting map from Call of Pripyat) and ran into a building with about ten mercs. They all got alerted very quickly, but while they knew the general area I was in, most of them were facing the wrong way when they came down some stairs, so I could take them out with a silenced weapon, and apparently, perhaps due to the silencer, they never got my specific location. So I survived, barely.
But there are clearly degrees of awareness for the AI. It’s just extremely difficult to see enough patterns to figure out how it really works.
