I did unlock Risk of Rain 2’s Mercenary. They’re a purely melee character when all the others are all ranged, so I was curious as to how they play. It started off a bit clumsy, without the ease of attacking that the other characters enjoyed. I was bothered by Wisps- little floating fireballs that ranged attacks dispatch with ease, but the Merc had a harder time getting at.
The more I played with the skills I had the more I realised I needed to adopt a different playstyle. On the left and right mouse button are slash and spin respectively, doing decent area damage to nearby enemies. Simple enough. You have a dash that stuns and damages anything you pass near, and if it hits you can immediately chain it up to three times. Your final skill involves blinking all around a single enemy hitting them repeatedly from all sides, like Nightcrawler. You also get a double jump from the off, unlike other characters who need an item.
I was wrong about Wisps. Wisps are easy, once you realise you should rarely touch the ground in combat. Dash three times like a deranged pinball, ending by something big so you can Nightcrawler it (which makes you briefly immune, by the way). When that ends, use your second jump to stay airborne, and your spin to slow your fall. Your dash comes off cooldown now, and your Kurt Wagner tribute comes off while you’re dashing. Repeat until everything is dead. Fighting bosses this way is terrific fun.
All that to say RoR2 has terrific character design. I’m not sure I like the Merc more than the Huntress (or getting the Engineer turrets to wear spectacles, which is freaking adorable), but I love how different it feels. Now to try for Rex, and to eagerly await the upcoming update.
