I’ve only played a little, because I have a crappy cold and I couldn’t face playing a game last night so I watched Star Trek Discovery instead, but I tried a bit of Apotheon and also a very small bit of Bomber Crew.
Apotheon is the game that looks like it was painted on the side of a greek vase.
I have to say they’ve totally nailed the aesthetic and it looks great. Unfortunately as a side on platformer/fighting game the combat seems to have a couple of major flaws.
It’s an ‘Abuse’ style control system where WASD controls movement and the mouse controls targeting. While this always sounded great in theory I’ve never really gotten along with them, and this is no exception. Infact it’s worse because the pointer is a little white diamond that I often lose track of, and so I find myself not hitting someone because it turns out I’m looking at the floor/ceiling.
The other issue is that enemies run at you, and you swing a sword at them, but if they get too close (which they do) your sword swing seems to go behind them and you do no damage.
Sprites can run through each other, so it often seems to end up with me semi-superimposed over the enemy swinging away and missing.
Which is a shame, because I think the basic sword + shield + thrown spears combat could be nice.
I’m not sure I really played enough of Bomber Crew to form a worthwhile impression, but it seems to be a 3d FTL meets Cannon Fodder that might well work really well. Basically role assigning meets plate juggling meets recruitment of cute army guys.
It’ll just depend whether the plate juggling is fun and tense, or just gets old and annoying.
Also, Rime just seems to never end, despite seeming to always be on the verge of ending. HLTB says 6 hours, but I’m sure I’ve been playing it for much longer than that… or maybe it just feels that way.
