Well, lost my way for a while there. Pretty much solely been playing Warframe since early this year (after Arenanet screwed up and playing Guild Wars 2 got iffy).
This week I’ve had an urge to play survival games, though.
Went back to The Forest for a bit. It’s a nice game, but not really the thing I need right now.
Then I went back to 7 Days To Die, which is the thing I need, but … I’ve played so much of alpha 16 and earlier versions that it feels repetitive.
So I tried alpha 17. It looks great, lots of new buildings and stuff. Unfortunately, they added encumbrance. Being encumbered eats stamina, and when you start out, you can only carry very, very little, so you either have to not pick up anything or make chests everywhere to dump stuff off in. Otherwise you end up spending half an hour breaking down a wooden door (and, just to mock you further, you can’t just read books anymore; now you need a high enough stat to be able to read them, which means you get to carry those around too).
oh, and regaining stamina takes food and water, so you need even more of that than you already did, which means spending even more time looking for it.
You can carry more by adding points in certain stats when you level up, but over about two hours in two different sessions of the game, I didn’t manage to gain a single level, so…
Aside from that, I’m a bit tired of zombies being everywhere (in A16 and A17, you practically get hordes of sleepers inside every building too, not just outside as in previous alphas, so now it can take ages to clear a single building). I’d prefer it if you just met the occasional zombie (plus rare wandering hordes), instead of constantly getting interrupted, but I’ve had no luck modding things so far. And playing on peaceful gets a little too uneventful.
So I tried Subnautica. Pretty game and quite pleasant. I think I could get into it at some other point, but right now it’s not really what I’m looking for.
And then I tried The Long Dark. I started out with the campaign because I figured it would work as some kind of introduction to the game. So…
Plane crashes, I wander around gathering stuff, bandage my bleeding wound. Heart bar starts to go down, so I figure it’s due to cold, but all the fires in the area magically don’t give off heat. They do, on the other hand, set you on fire if you stand in them (but even that doesn’t warm you up). Then I try placing a campfire, but you apparently can’t do that in the area. I drink a can of soda which raises two of the bars, but otherwise doesn’t help any (I look for the snack bar I picked up in my room a few hours earlier, but I guess it got eaten by gremlins or something; I don’t have it). Some icon appears in the top center of the screen. I can’t decipher what it’s supposed to depict or signify. There’s a message about resting, but I can’t do that.
My vision gets more and more blurry. Then I die.
Then I try again and die again, none the wiser as to why or what I’m supposed to do to avoid it.
I’m rather used to obscure systems, lack of tutorials and whatnot in survival games, and I’m not averse to looking up instructions, but if it’s something I’m required to do practically before I’ve even started playing, then maybe the game could use a better introduction. (Not looking for instructions here, btw; that experience soured me on the game, so I’ll uninstall and maybe try again in some months).
So … I’m not sure what to do now. I should try ARK, but that takes up 100gb and I can’t clear up that much space without uninstalling a lot of stuff I don’t want to uninstall.
