I “finished” my first playthrough of Hollow Knight last night. Solid 88% complete on my first time through. Now I’m going back and collecting all the bits and pieces I missed along the way. One of the bosses, the Traitor Lord, is an aboslute nightmare. Most of its attacks do 2 masks worth of damage at once and he’s ridiculously quick. I’m strongly considering giving up on 100% now. This fight is causing me more trouble than anything before it besides maybe the Watcher Knights. Doesn’t help that the nearest bench is in BFE.
I started on Alwa’s Awakening after I gave up on that boss in HK. Bought it on sale because of the praise I’d seen from RPS. I’m not sure that I’m sold on it. The abilities you get are different from your typical Metroidvania fare which is nice, but the player character feels so sluggish to control. I’m just about to the second boss, I believe.
Otherwise been playing around with Streets of Rogue. It’s not often that I play a game that makes me giggle like a fool. The game is incredibly open in the way it lets you approach any given situation. The different classes actually feel different. And the way everything interacts together makes for some incredible anecdotes. Truly emergent gameplay. It’s essentially a top-down “immersive sim”.
Then I’ve been giving For the King a go. Absolutely fantastic game here. I’m not that great, but I’ve made some huge improvements since I first played. I barely realized I can use the lore store to unlock characters and other things, so I’ve gotten myself the Herbalist. Haven’t tried it out yet though. The only downside, IMO, is that this game definitely feels like it would be way more fun to play in MP. Sadly, I don’t think I have any friends that’d like to take it up with me.
I also purchased Absolver and Dynasty Warriors 8: Xtreme Legends Complete Edition. I ended up refunding Absolver. I decided I’m just not sure I want to spend that much time with an online game that’s future is highly questionable. Player counts seem to be under 100 average for the last 30 days, and trends in the past don’t really make it seem like it’ll get any better than that.
As for DW8, I love it. DW was one of the first games I’d ever played on Xbox, so it’s feeding into that nostalgic feeling while being a more modern version of the game. Though I don’t honestly know if anything has changed or what, since it’s been over 15 years since I played the original one.
Phew. Lots going on in gaming for me right now. I’m also thinking about finally trying to beat one of the Souls games. After persevering and finishing Hollow Knight, I think I’m up for the challenge. Probably DS3, though I do have my save file on DS1 that’s at the Gaping Dragon section.
And THAT is all I’m playing right now.
