I did finish Dawn of Magic a few days back, so I have now properly gone back to Fallout: New Vegas. I likely won’t try to play this anywhere near to completion since I don’t want to burn out myself, but at the very least I did rather enjoy my session yesterday. Probably because I found the Brotherhood of Steel and there wasn’t as much boring walking and talking.
At least that’s what usually is giving me trouble with Fo:NV so far. I mean places usually have good reasons for being there and the people’s dialogue usually has a good amount of frequently interesting context, but it often requires so damn much walking and looking around big places to actually find them, that it can be quite boring. Especially since the people themselves are often just not particularly interesting. Both in regards to Voiceacting and just Character traits. They often seem quite mundane and the fact that Speech check successes frequently lead to very quick and unbelievable changes of opinions, doesn’t help. Other dialogue checks seem to work better though.
Exploration has also been a mixed bag. At the very least walking around in huge empty places seems to be less of a problem when I’m out in the Wastelands. Mostly due to the mystery of unexplored places I’d say. Vault 22 was an interesting change of scenery for instance and it was also nice that I was allowed to explore the Fiend Vault in South Vegas without having to kill my way through it.
All in all, I feel like the basic concept of a huge open world like this is just no a sound one though I admiteddly haven’t made much of an effort to try and determine why. I’m guessing though, that for me at least, it comes down to the game just not always being particularly atmospheric. I like the soundtrack, but that alone just isn’t enough. In terms of basic world simulation (not world building!) like in regards to weather, day-night-cycle, physics, faction systems that don’t just depend on the player and such, it’s just not good.
Edit: But I have enjoyed most of my time with the game in the last few days, so make of that what you will.
