I ended up listening to some Smashing Pumpkins for no reason. (actually it might have been because Captain Marvel put me in a 90s mood, and because I didn’t have Celebrity Skin on my phone).
Unfortunately, as seems to be the case far too often these days, this lead me to googling and led me to realize that Billy Corgan worked on Celebrity Skin (yay!) but then to find out that he’s apparently gone batshit and is a regular guest on crap like InfoWars, is an anti-vaxer and complains about SJWs. (boo!).
So now I have to add more works to the list of things to feel guilty about liking. sigh.
Anyway, I also came here to ask a question. I suspect this may be the wrong audience to ask, but you’re my default ‘explain to me what’s going on in the west’ source, so…
What’s going on with the popularity of BTS?
I ask not because they’re a rubbish cheesy boy band, because those have always been popular, but because for years I’ve laughed at how horribly uncool J-pop and K-pop boy bands are, with their fashion that looks like they were dressed by their grandmother to be page boys, and with all fashion designers for boy-bands in Asia apparently obsessed with the Sergeant Pepper outfits.
I mean, Bros or New Kids or Boyzone had dumb fashion, but at least it was relatively cool/contemporary at the time.
So I’m confused about whether people are liking them because somehow they think they look cool, or because they think it’s some kind of weird/cute foreign thing, or maybe they wear different outfits when they perform overseas?
I’m just worried because if j/k-pop boy band fashion goes mainstream worldwide I may lose my final grasp on sanity.
