That just seems like the same bunch of nonsense every other time it’s been said, to me, Fuzzy.
You’re saying absolutely nothing original there. That’s a tired old saw that you’re repeating. Received wisdom even, by a certain class of extremely neoliberal centrist. I totally get why he got elected. That’s a simple as pie - terrible bunch of shitfuckers as the alternatives, and Hillary “No seriously EVERYONE hates her” Clinton as the alternative (you can go back through my posts here and note me saying it was a bad idea), and she just BARELY lost at that! It was the Democrat’s election to lose, but they managed it, with a little help from the FBI.
Where your theory utterly fails, falls flat on it’s face, and has fallen flat on it’s face every time it’s been repeated since the election, which is dozens of times, is that he’s vile, utterly vile. Vile and venal. No-one, at this point, can seriously say “Oh a non-politician might be better than a politician”. I’m not asking “Why was he elected?!”. That’s abundantly clear, I agree.
I’m asking why does anyone still support him? Let alone 42% of people. He’s a vile, venal scumbag. You cannot, as a rational human being, believe he is anything but a scumbag. He’s pretty much outright said it. So how NOW, do people support him? Admittedly it is fewer than it was but still…
As for tolerance being out, well, yes, the insane intolerance shown towards Obama was a huge part of that. It’s been out a lot longer than Trump. It’s complete shit to pretend this is new. Obviously it isn’t. The Republicans had been “othering” Democrats for two decades - Demon-rats, Lie-bruls, the birth certificate and so on. They’d been brutal, merciless and so on. At the same period, the Democrats had actually been moving TO the right, under the mistaken assumption that that was the problem, and largely refusing to engage in the same tactics (for better or worse) - and then finally they went as far right as they could, but the right kept moving further right, into LITERAL NAZI territory, so now we have Whitehouse packed with far-right people, many with LITERAL NAZI connections.
So the tactic succeeded. The Deplorables are GENUINELY VILE people, this is what you don’t seem to get. This is the pretense you’re operating under here. Take the worst people in the Obama administration, the most extreme, and you’ve basically got a bunch of lily-livered mild-mannered centrists (not far to the left of you). Take the worst people in Trump’s administration, and not only have you got a huge number competing for that coveted position of the “the worst people in the administration”, but they’re extremists, really, really extreme people. This isn’t “deniable”, this isn’t “echo chamber”, this is easy to demonstrate, and you know it’s the case.
EDIT: I mean, absolute worst person in the Obama administration, I think has to go to Rahm Emanuel (sp?). He’s a shit, a slippery snake of a machine politician, as he’s shown in Chicago again since. But that shit wouldn’t even make the top 25 if he was in the Trump administration. He’s not stupid, evil, or genuinely malicious enough. Trump has systematically appointed people to destroy their organisations, to destroy the environment, and so on. Not for any real gain - a great example is with the EPA. There’s absolutely no financial gain, no long-term gain from pushing coal, for example, but that’s what Trump wants, and so that’s what he gets. It is ironically the Presidential equivalent of “rolling coal”:
