And these are directly connected, because since the '70s, the Tories have used “Brussels meddling” or “The EU” or just “Europe” as their generic whipping boy for absolutely everything that happens that poorer Tory supporters don’t like, no matter how grotesque of a lie it is, and have been aided and abetted by - and could not have succeeded without, their Tory poodle press. And the actual reason they oppose the EU is that they feel it threatens various dubious short-term money-making schemes and they and their buddies have, generally speaking.
I would argue that there was a period, under nuLabour, when “the EU” was actually largely redeemed and seen as positive, when Blair was in charge and before he just became a massive war-starting idiot.
But that’s beside the point because after that the Tories, via both the Tory papers and constant, active, actual lying from politicians (the BBC not helping at all, completely failing to address outright lies whilst getting into massive squabbles over stuff that’s largely irrelevant), particularly May, one of the worst of the bunch despite claiming to be pro-EU (she constantly messaged that “the EU” - not the ECHR - “the EU” was blocking her from doing stuff, as Home Secretary - in fact most of the time it was UK courts, and it was literally never the EU) managed re-toxify it, and make it so legions poorly-informed angry people thought “the EU” was somehow taking their jobs (and probably their women), straightening their bananas (!!!), helping terrorists, and burning down the NHS, when in fact all of these things were being done by the Tories (well, except the bananas, where it was just fiction).
Come on man, let’s not all pretend we haven’t all played that scenario out in Civ - "Yes City-State, be my ally, it’s a good idea! Oh you’re being invaded before it became formal! Oh that’s terrible! < looks in other direction >
You say that like it’s a bad thing. If there is every a future society on Earth that is both stable and benevolent, it will NOT be one that respects national governments.
As for Article 13, yes it’s incredibly dumb, but the the Tories, including May herself, and nuLabour (back when they were a thing) also, have proposed things that either equally or more dumb regarding the internet, and continue to do so. We will fuck ourselves much, much harder on the Internet than the EU ever could. Teresa would Brexit us, especially private citizens, from the internet as a whole if she got her way. She’s said as much.
