Inspired by your post, I played a Bretonnia campaign (as Louen) and I had a GREAT time, so thank you!
I did likewise re: sea and actually now I just pretty much always have a lord out scouting the seas in Mortal Empires, because even if they got a 10000g one like every 50 turns or so, they’d be paying for themselves, and in reality, they find a hell of a lot more stuff a hell of a lot more often (including that 10-turn empire-wide buff that gives you like 10% more gold earned!).
Chivalry does really force you to play in a very different way, and I actually completed the Mortal Empires campaign pretty fast because I focused on earning it, and both the debuffs and buffs from it are fascinating. When I finally got Alberic to confederate he was covered in debuffs from being unchivalrous (FE wasn’t though, she was fine!).
The cavalry focus also forced me to take a very different approach to a lot of battles and goddamn, Grail Knights and Grail Guardians are pretty much god-tier units thanks to their Perfect Vigor. I had a 20/80 battle against a vampire lord’s small army with a tiny garrison which happened to include a Grail Knight and managed to actually WIN thanks to countless charges from said Knight - without Perfect Vigor the unit would have been Exhausted about 1/4 of the way through the battle.
I went with Greenskins for the final objective because I was kind of bored with Chaos, and that got very exciting because it seemed like all the GS LLs were insta-respawning on death, and rapidly building doomstacks, faster than I think their economy could possibly have supported (even with the usual AI cheating), so I think they must get some kind of turbo-boost once you select them as the final target.
My wife got me to pay attention to vigor generally (tbh, I’d been ignoring it) and it makes an absolutely huge difference to how I play now. I started a Kroq-gar campaign and that’s been huge fun of a very different kind, though all my early-mid game decisions have bitten me in the arse.
I also finally tried using a “gun-line” chevron-based formation recently with the Lizardmen, because I had a lot of dino-mounted artillery, and that combined with saturation bombing from the pterodons is completely insane. I beat gigantic armies it was quite convinced I would lose against with the gunline (where you angle your units so your guns/artillery can shoot whatever is hitting your melee).
In general the fire-bolas Pterodons, Stegadons of all kinds, and Saurus Warriors (esp. Blessed but even normal ones!) are the MVPs of my Lizardman army, but I’ve had to work with almost every unit and they all have their place - except maybe the Cold One cavalry - it just doesn’t seem to be good cavalry, due to mediocre/low MA/MD, not being all that fast, and going berserk when you really need it not to. Carnosaurs seem to do pretty much all the same things Cold One Riders/Spear-Riders can do but er… way better. I mean they are higher-tier, but kind of easier to get hold of thanks to Kroq’s “spawn a dino-army” rite (which proved pretty hilarious - I wish I’d realized how it worked earlier, and just saved up 12k gold).
