My cheap-as-chips laptop is unfortunately coming to the end of its useful life, especially for gaming, and I’m looking at going for a bit of a spendy option.
I’m looking at specs in the region of:
- 8th gen i7
- GTX1060 6Gb
- 16Gb RAM
- 15.6" screen
The off-the-shelf options seem somewhat limited. The Asus FX504 seems to have some thermal issues, so I’ll probably give that a swerve, which leaves msi as the most likely (https://www.overclockers.co.uk/msi-gp63-nvidia-gtx-1060-6gb-gddr5-15.6-fhd-120hz-i7-8750h-gaming-laptop-lt-279-ms.html).
However, that 128Gb SSD, although backed up by a 1Tb spinner, seems a bit diddy. Second, it looks a bit… gamery (especially that large scorpion/dragon/whatever it is on the back of the screen). Whilst I probably won’t be using this whilst wearing a suit and tie, my personal taste is a bit more subtle.
The more left-field option is getting pc specialist to make one (https://www.pcspecialist.co.uk/notebooks/recoil-II-15/). Similar specs to the msi is about the same price, but I like the fact that I can customise it. The aesthetics are a bit more my cup of tea too. And, it probably sounds a bit silly and naive but I’d rather give my money to a smaller company.
Finally, I’m planning on using this for coding too, so a decent keyboard is a requirement. The pcspecialist looks like it should have a better keyboard, although reviews in youtubeland seem to rate the msi’s too. Hard to tell without getting one’s mitts on them though. Most of this coding will be in linux, so hardware that plays nice with that would save a lot of headaches.
So, what’s the thinking? Have I overlooked anything vitally important? Any other brands I should be considering? Wait for Black Friday? Or even wait for the nvidia 20xx series?
