It’s been a while (since this thread was updated AND since everyone tried and maybe stuck with Win10) and something interesting seems to be happening with some of the folks I support who upgraded.
I honestly expected a few of them would downgrade again but only ONE person did that and only because they found Win10 ‘confusing’.
Roll forward about a year tho and I’m getting a lot of calls from people saying their PC has become ‘unusable’. This weekend I had 3 laptops “on the bench” with the same complaint (very similar specs too) so I tinkered a bit.
Whilst these laptops were fine after the WIn10 upgrade last year, MS I think have continued to add stuff into Win10 (esp the Creators update) which has rendered them pretty much unusable at this point - they’re sluggish at everything and freeze-up from time-to-time for no obvious reason.
My first guess was that the PCs just needed a clean-up, however nothing I tried really improved anything. Deeper investigation revealed a lot of system processes/services running and a lot of congestion - esp to the HDD
So I wiped one completely and clean installed a reasonably current Win10 build and it wasn’t really any better - I then migrated that to an SSD which made a BIT of a difference but really not enough to make me want to use it.
Reverting that same laptop to HDD/Win7, it ran VASTLY better and so it’s remaning in that state and I’m suggesting the same for the other 2 laptops (it’s that or buy new ones!!)
For the curious - laptop specs varied a bit but the testbed was a T3000 Celeron with 3Gb of RAM (I nicked a stick to make it 4GB and that didn’t make ANY difference). All the laptops were ‘officially’ limited to 4Gb - some might take more but it’s so pricey no-one would ever do that.
Not surprising this I suppose - pushes people into buying a new laptop and all that - but I’m not looking forward to installing Win7 again (tho that one install wasn’t too bad - only took about 19 hours to update to current with no hitches or issues!!)
