Needless to say, it’s an odd one. The actual gameplay isn’t bad, if you like low key stuff like Euro Truck Simulator or Snowrunner, while also being kind of less than those games in some ways.
The cutscenes and story are pretty wack. The carrying/delivering is pretty good mechanically, but the rewards for delivering/grinding for materials are awful (imo). You get rewarded in Likes, which is completely meaningless, and graded on speed, condition of delivery etc. This builds a relationship with the depot you’re delivering to, which then rewards you with more Likes per delivery (ugh) or an equipment upgrade. The upgrades are cool Kojima gadgets or vehicles but they barely affect the basic gameplay, so the payoff is poor, which undermines the whole thing. It also doesn’t help that the menu for managing your cargo is a bit of a mess. I can see why they didn’t change it for PC (it’s very console-y) but it is a little irritating and awkward to use.
I’m now at the bit where you can build roads, shelters, and stuff, and I know this was a big hit with many people but I’m not finding it engaging and am pretty much skipping it so far.
All that being said, I am enjoying it a lot when the game allows me to just get on with making a delivery in this wild landscape. It has that same planning-a-route-and-executing energy that Snowrunner has, but dialed back a fair bit.
