I have recently been playing a bit more Maelstrom. It’s a bit broken as an RTS, but it also has tons of dynamic elements, so that it is actually almost more fun to watch replays than to actually play it.
Just a small thing to start off. Shadows change with the time of day.
Same goes for the particular kind of lighting and the position of the reflections you get. During Noon.
And during the night (Edit: The amount of solar energy that gets generated depends on the time of day.) My AI-ally had annoyingly flooded most of the map at this point.
The thing at the bottom of the preceding shot is indeed the moon, racing across the water at high-speed.
Other than that the dynamics mostly concern the terrain:
At times this happens with pumping stations when the terrain gets destroyed.
I had actually terraformed a wall to keep out the water, but as could be seen in one of the other screenshots, it didn’t help for long.
From another game, where an AI repeatedly tried to revive a hero in front of my defense line. With obvious results.
Another case of something strange happening because of the deformation. It’s pretty common that the shots of units get blocked by terrain, but this here not so much.
I had never noticed this before, but these artillery shells don’t just eject at the back but then also conveniently roll below the chassis and disappear. It’s magic
Flames and smoke getting spread by… well, probably by succeeding shockwaves I think.
Blood and water and sprinkles happening. I just thought it looked a little artful somehow.
I’m assaulting a base from the south. Their base was half flooded at this point, but note how in the front the water has gone up in smoke for the moment. Probably from all my flamethrowers and molotovs I think.
Legionnaries and Vipers engaging Hai-Genti from the left. The water is frozen from the shots of Ice Hammer-infantry. From the right a whirlwind approaches.
And for last a few shots from a match that lasted pretty long and turned into something a little ridiculous:
At first I tried to crack their base with mostly Marauders and Firebugs, which use…
…flamethrowers and molotovs.
But the match lasted pretty long and eventually this started to happen repeatedly.
I managed to beat them somehow, but it wasn’t exclusively fun… not to speak of all the environmental destruction.
