It’s interesting which games are conspicuous in their absence from consideration. I’m particularly disappointed to not see Slime Rancher anywhere - it’s easily been my favorite game that I’ve played from this year (not that I’ve played many).

I believe Slime Rancher was an unjust causality of Pip moving on - she played it, which meant other staff didn’t feel that they needed to for coverage. Then she went to PC Gamer. I haven’t looked but I wouldn’t be surprised if it got an award over there!

I haven’t played it yet but it’s fairly high on my to-play list once I’m prepared for another timesuck game.

That explanation really helps to understand how some of the games got chosen and others dropped. I like that system. The list doesn’t seem as random anymore.

It’s a few hours of a fairly standard VN before the interesting stuff starts happening. I’d say the set up is necessary, and that for me it was worth it - Doki Doki was easily one of my favourite games of the year.

This year was a rollercoaster, and while I didn’t do as well this year I thoroughly enjoyed the conversation and the excitement of waiting for the new game each day. This one of the loveliest community events in RPS.

On Crate & Crowbar, Slime rancher seemed to be Pip’s very-close-second game of the year… partly because she’s kind of done with it. I think Edith Finch was her final choice. (though it was rather inconclusive)

• I feel like Pip should have gotten a vote, since she left so close to he end of the year.
• Is Matt now an official employee? It’s hard to know given that it’s traditional to not update the footer for at least 6 months after a staff change. (and given that Dominic seems to be doing most of the writing atm)
• The new system seems like a good idea. There was a slight feeling in previous years that games everyone thought were “not bad” trumped some that only one person played.
• Surprised Heat Signature didn’t make it.
• It seems like this year there were a lot of really good games, but not really one standout one. (Except maybe Plunkbat, but that seems more cultural than in games terms)

I’m not too surprised. From everything I’ve read and (from what little I played), it’s a bit too repetitious and flawed.

It seems like this year there were a lot of really good games, but not really one standout one.

2017 was such a great year for games that I think nothing particularly “stood out” because everything was busy standing out.

Thanks to those keeping score! Always fun to guess.

I don’t find the list to be particularly exciting, but I don’t think that was ever the case. It is, however, still one of the better ways to find out about games that I hadn’t heard of before. Hand of Fate 2 might be that game this year.
