My personal take
Surprise! We’re getting a new game Humble this Thursday!
And what a bundle it is: step up to the top tier (12 cu) for Assetto Corsa and its three Dream Packs. There’s a pretty large ‘but, though’: keep reading, if you’re interested.
Made by Kunos, who may be remembered by the aficionados for the celebrated netKar sim (which was free to boot!), and its commercial brethren netKar Pro, both highly regarded for the unparalleled degree of realism of their physical models; nKp was up there years before iRacing was even a thing, and still aced it in some ways, years later, despite the pharaonic (sorry, Papyrus fans, can’t help it) outlay of cash and massive technological muscle flexing of Dave Kaemmer’s company. That a one-man indie could pull off something like that is indeed telling.
On the other hand, netKar Pro’s excellent underlying model and force feedback were only matched by the disastrousness of its development history and horrible netcode performance. After a sudden disappearance, and the ensuing silence which basically lasted entire years (at some point it was speculated Kunos had ditched nKp for other projects, including a motorbike sim that never materialized), during which the community assumed all was lost, Kunos just as unexpectedly came back from dead to reboot nKp, by adding content, some of which licensed, and addressing the most obvious problems including netcode.
Kunos however still couldn’t remediate some of netKar Pro’s limitations, among which a spartan UI that was only good enough for the hard-core (factoid: its telemetry data could be analyzed with the same AIM software used on the racetrack - for free! No DLC needed), an outdated graphics engine, a ton of small but annoying and seemingly hard to fix bugs, limited licensed content and, last but not least, a terrible reputation that was better left behind.
Enter Assetto Corsa, a revamped version of too-realistic-for-Kunos’-good netKar Pro. Predictably, it was also tamed down, as Kunos had over the years told to everyone who would listen how racing sim didn’t make enough money and sim-racers were impossible to please.
Despite that, Assetto Corsa still easily snatched the title of most impressive sim-cade around, a testament to Kunos’ abilities, as well as the gross disregard for any kind of realism in the sim-cade segment, where fidelity of the simulation takes a backseat to, well, everything else, really.
The good news is that, physics notwithstanding, indeed Assetto Corsa improves on mostly everything else netKar Pro did, well or badly; it can even be raced effectively on gamepads (whereas a wheel was a necessity for the majority of nKp’s life), which is a huge boon for expanding the horizons of the business.
Given Kunos and the rest of his now expanded dev team, obviously have a talent for delivering what would otherwise be called a ‘visceral’ driving experience - but also a horrible, horrible track record of not respecting their userbase in any meaningful way, my recommendation would be yes, to go for the top tier, however please consider using the sliders, here, to send a message.
For 12 of your currency units, Assetto Corsa, with its three Dream Packs, is surely worth the asking price, although I should add there’s still a plenty of paid DLC not included in this bundle.
Nevertheless, that Assetto Corsa has the potential to seal the deal (albeit AC+DPs can still be had for cheaper with some patience in sales), is indeed a good thing, because the rest of the bundle really can’t help but drown in a sea of mediocrity. Take the Project CARSes for instance: the best thing I can say about them is that, as Car Porn Screenshot Generators indeed they do take pretty shots. I can’t stray as far as to say they do what it says on the tin, though, given Slightly Mad’s incomprehensible claims about the qualities of their dynamic models.
