Requirements had been stagnating for quite some time because of consoles. Those are obviously also to blame for the considerable jump recently. But I don’t really mind, because I usually can turn some details down and still run games just fine. The only real show-stopper has been the mandatory 64bit OS, but that’s fine with me, too. According to Steam, about 70% of their users have at least 4GB of system RAM, and about 50% have more than that. You really need a 64bit system to make use of that, and 8GB of RAM isn’t really expensive.
