Oh yeah, Elite’s handling of collisions is… not great. Especially since ships appear to change mass when the destruction animations start. But SC is a whole other order of madness. Its understanding of inertia seems to be at about Jurassic Park Trespasser’s level, for a start.
Or, you know, just look at how Elite ships’ cockpits are designed. They also have snazzy polygonal shapes and struts all over the place, but the developers actually take the player’s perspective into account when designing them, which is why only two ships in the game can be legitimately be said to have inconvenient cockpits, those being the Adder and the Fer-de-Lance. And in the former you still have the radar (and the field of view isn’t that bad) while in the latter you learn to look past the strut within a few minutes.
