Hilarious but quite sad too (I mean the actual twitter, not the parody).
Is this how self-entitled the Star Wars fandom has become ? Not liking a movie is something, and it’s totally legitimate but wanting to erase it from the Star Wars cannon and remake it ? How and when did this sound like an idea ?
I mean I utterly hated Prometheus and Alien Covenant. I still consider them as part of the Alien franchise. They exist. They’re legit movies.
Seriously though, I do find the whole idea that Star Wars somehow should cater to its fans first instead of actually doing something creative kinda worrying. Movies aren’t created for the fans, and for a simple reason : fans more often than not have shitty ideas. They want to see movies that corresponds to their own idea of a franchise and more often than not these ideas are…not very compelling. If it was only for fans the Red Wedding in GoT would have never happened and the Starks would have vanquished the Lannisters in an epic battle. It would have been boring as fuck. Besides, despite all they claim, yes, it’s a small minority of fans who are complaining. SW VIII made 1.3 fucking billion dollars. People went to see it even months after the initial release when word had time to spread and controversy to arise - and don’t tell me people went to see it just because it’s Star Wars, Solo flopped despite the Star Wars name, because Solo was just meh.
And that’s just it. This “concept” is so void of any creative idea it’s impressive. It’s hilarious, yes, but it’s also depressing.
I mean seriously, a few extracts from their tweets :
"the hero archetypes that made the OT so great. If you have the hero archetype it doesn’t matter what the actor looks or sounds like, everyone can identify"
How can you so fundamentaly ignore what it means to write interesting characters ? Besides, just a proof they only want to remake the original trilogy ever and ever again - say, didn’t we criticize SW VII for that ? And I love the "doesn’t matter if the hero is a white heterosexual male like in the ENTIRE GODDAMN SAGA you’ll identify with him because he goes through an arbitrary number of steps that may or may not be universal ! yay !
And the movie fails to penetrate into the ethos of human nature (the basis for telling stories).
If anyone can tell me what “ethos of the human nature is” please explain. Tell me this is a parody, because it sounds like the bad philosophy I wrote when I was fifteen.
But seriously, the project itself is incredibly stupid. I mean, let’s skip over the fact that THEY DON’T HAVE ANY GODDAMN RIGHT TO STAR WARS but their proposal is to gather a team of writers from all sides and write the most consensual script possible while having the highest possible amount of fanservice : in my book that’s how you write the blandest movie ever.
Anyway. A bunch of (probably) teenagers whining because, essentially, a movie made almost 50 years after the beginning of the saga isn’t similar to the movie that started it all and features modern themes.
EDIT : also, I stumbled accross this : https://uproxx.com/hitfix/best-funniest-tweets-mra-no-women-edit-star-wars-the-last-jedi
THE STUPIDITY RIDE NEVER ENDS !
I officially support the idea of a female-only episode of Star Wars now.
