Not specifically saying ROS should have addressed Climate Change or contemporary subjects per se.
But I’m not going to apologise to have expectations that a billion dollar grossing film should have aspirations around something to do with art or humanity in at least broad strokes. In theory it does, or pretends to, by hammering the whole “We have each other, we’re friends, we can do anything”, that’s it’s supposed keynote. But in a series in which that aspect of community and family has always rung true, even in the prequels, ROS relationships are profoundly broken.
Rose and Finn are the exemplars of it, they apparently can barely look at each other now through Abrams thinly disguised contempt for their bond, to be replaced by Finn and another Black Person in the most White Woke deference to “diversity” , because in Star Wars, somehow, racial solidarity is exactly the same as it is in our universe. Finn’s race, which throughout the previous two films is never highlighted as being of note, becomes pure tokenism as a consequence in ROS. Not only that, but due to Abrams spite and indifference towards the character of Rose, we have the disgusting situation where one POC is used to fucking crucify the role of a hitherto main character played by another POC.
Poe has a genuine relationship with no-one, because in the interest of crucifying TLJ the established and strong dynamic of his relationship with Leia and authority figures which was developed is all but jettisoned. He needs FInn to lead alongside him just because, at one point, he says he does. That’s about it. Their friendship is not remotley special or notable. They introduce that lady in, I like her, from the Americans, she’s great actually. But it’s telling that his bond with her is far more authentic than his bond with anyone else he’s met in the trilogy.
And it is not friendship and companionship that saves him and the Rebels, it’s the fucking magic that means all the ships can just arrive out of wherever. Or, even more than that, the fact that the Sith ghosts or whoever the fuck made the preposterous fleet of the Final Order decided that, yes, after multiple defeats of doomsday devices and armadas owing to over reliance on a singular focus point, they would do exactly the same thing again. But nonetheless the efficacy of friendship is in magic teleportation, with people you don’t know, who don’t communicate with you, and just like, appear, after lots of other people have died for dramatic effect. Yay.
But the crux of the whole shit pile?
Chewie’s other best mate dies, aChewie who for my money is presented throghout the tiilogy as visbly more vulnerable after Han’s death, and in one of the few moments of genuine pathos the film can muster, literally no-one gives a shit . Fucking CHEWBACCA is in bits because PRINCESS LEIA is dead and people are just like “ahh, sorry pal, i’ll leave you to it”. The same Chewbacca they were so desperate to rescue before, they can’t find a second to comfort.
If anything needs to tell you anything about Abrams and Star Wars it is the fact that he gets palpably angry at the revisionism of TLJ but shows basically no respect in the framing or use of the franchises two enduring mainstays who were there from the first, one of whom literally died in the filming of the trilogy, but thinks that it’s endearing to pull in Lando and Wedge and all other EU bits for a final send off. Star Wars to him, the core that needs to be protected from revisionism, is wrote visual coding, devoid of an emotional core. ROS is Tom Clancy at his worst writing Star Wars, all material and arsenal and ship tonnage and warheads and lasers. He is throwing in his favourite toys. That’s it. No wonder Disney love him.
So no, I’m not saying it should have been about Climate Change or the like. I’m simply stating that by making his film about nothing other than superficial star wars bollocks, it’s not only a bad film, it’s a bad Star Wars film, and is about nothing other than taking down attempts to make Star Wars artisitcally meaningful or anything other than superficial masturbatory fanfic . There is literally no other Star Wars film you can say that of, but it is the fucking essence of ROS.
