Now that Killer Instinct is available outside the realms of Xbox One and Windows 10, has anyone picked it up? Are there any long-time players on said platforms around that haven’t spoken up (probably to keep all the fun for themselves)? Has this piqued your interest and you wanna give the free-to-play version (available on Xbox One and the Windows 10 store only) a spin?
What is it? At the outset, KI looks very similar to the Street Fighter formula, a 6-button fighter (light, medium, heavy punches and kicks) with familiar mechanics and “ground rules”.
That all goes out the window once you start examining the combo system: KI uses a very unique “sandwich” structure, with combos consisting of an Opener, Linker(s) and an Ender. What makes this stand out is that, as opponent, you can break a combo at almost any given point by guessing or recognizing the strength of an attack (light, medium or heavy). Guess wrong or time it badly and you get locked out for a couple of seconds (and you’ll have to eat whatever combo your oppressor had coming for you). Combos play out like two-way interactions instead of forcing you to sit back and watch a 15 seconds combo helplessly.
It’s also probably one of the more beginner-friendly fighting games out there, with a heavy focus on mind games and less on frame-perfect execution (quarter circles and the dragon punch motion being the most complicated inputs).
I’m down for all kinds of shenanigans, be it lengthy sets, a couple of quick rounds, lab work or just the discussion of the game’s systems and mechanics. Just let me know!
(I’m fully aware that fighting games have historically had a hard time around here and more popular franchises have received close to no attention, but hey, you never know …)
