I run a lot of IJN DD, but I like to take out the battleboats now and then. Especially when this happens.

As someone with very little familiarity with this franchise - can free (or at the very least, pay-very-little) players be competitive? I like the idea of warship battling, particularly with RPS folks, but remember hearing some nasty things about “gold ammo” and such in World of Tanks (this was years ago, though).

Also: is it worldwide servers or is there a particular Europe server I should join to play with you guys?

Money doesn’t really help that much, it gives you more credits and xp with premium as you might expect but there is nothing like the “gold ammo” of WoT. Unfortunately the servers are not global, you have to choose from NA or EU.

World of Tanks has had premium ammo purchaseable with in-game credits for quiet some time now, The only thing World of games has thats RL money is the vehicles which isn’t pay to win, infact their just money makers as premium vehicles cost less to repair.
Premium just ups your xp/credit gain and then there is other options like camoflauge which is just o-la-la and clan creation costs RL money and for a reason because if you got a good team you could earn gold (costs money) by conquering the world map.
The only thing that would put anybody off is the grind, the first few teirs of either game is a breeze but hit mid to late teir starts to become a real big grind.

Pet hate’s in WoWs :

Battleship players 90% just want to sit and snipe and never push up in support.
Zerg’s, seeing this sooooo often 90% of the team all piss off down 1 side of the map leaving the other points uncontested or scouted and those who do go after them dead 90% of the time.

Par for the course in this sort of game.

Personally I really dislike how Wargaming is apparently unable to make a match maker that creates fair games. I just can’t be bothered playing unfair games.

So progressing:

Unlocked my 1st Carrier the “Langley” - very different gameplay.
Grinding up to my PepsiCola cruiser about 50% done.
Starting the grind up to a New York BS. Started playing BS’s one to unlock the carrier and 2 to see things from the other side after my bitching about BS players.

hows it progressing for the rest of you out there.

I’m at Tier V across the board with the IJN line, then a mix of III-IV in the US. The grind up to VI is painful. I used to enjoy the IJN carriers as well, but the US CVs are so overpowered with their fighters that taking the Hosho out is a chore.

I have the pensa at 7, the aoba and farragut at 6 and then a few at 5 and below. I have a premium at 6, 7 and 8 too but tend not to play them as high tiers is generally tirpitz spam.

I have an IJN and USN BB at Tier 6, IJN and USN cruiser at Tier 5 as well as the DDs. The matchmaking patch has so far been pretty good for me. Also have a Langley but I despise carriers. Love to swat aircraft from the sky in my Murmansk and my New Mexico is surprisingly good at it also. Halfway to a Tier 7 USN BB but not looking forward to it as the Colorado is a big step down from the New Mexico. Also, <3 the BB accuracy buff at short range.

I hate the Phoenix. Dear me that CL is awful. Can’t wait to get out of it in to the Omaha - ditto the FurryTaco for that matter. Anything must be better.

I didn’t mind the phoenix, just loaded AP and citadelled everything. The omaha is a lot better however. The furutaka is terrible though.

This, it also has torps. Its only real downside is its fragility.

I prefer it to the Omaha.

The fragility is what gets me. Whenever I take it out, anything including a DD is breaking something within the first salvo, usually the engine or steering gear, but often armament (and considering the stock hull has a mere 3 guns per side + torps there isn’t much spare). Yes it has torpedoes, but many of the maps I’m being thrown in to at the moment aren’t suited to cruisers with torps.

Basically my love is destroyers.
