Completely agree, there is a void that is not being filled. Companies have been avoiding it. But then again Sucker Punch’s Infamous series is still quite a fantastic blend of classic 3D platforming and action-adventure/open-world gameplay. So at least there is something there, but not maybe with the same kind of Crash Bandicoot/Mario appearance.
And of course there is Super Mario 3D World on WiiU. But definitely I feel there are missed opportunities here. I’d include Knack but although I think the game has some good qualities I just feel it is too limited in scope.
No reason not to go back to games like Mario Galaxy either though, especially on Dolphin emulator, those two games are incredible
The Tearaway re-release-remake should also be coming this year, I forget what the timeline or plan with that is though. I believe it will be a budget release and I think that is definitely appropriate.
We will also have to see what Media Molecule is really up to… I’m assuming at E3 that lid will come off their super-create-a-thing project. If any upcoming game has the potential to create a completely new “play-create-share” phenomenon, on any platform, I believe that one will be it. Fingers crossed it turns into something that special.
In other platforming game news though, a group of former Rare developers has decided to make a successor to their Banjo Kazooie series: http://gematsu.com/2015/02/rare-veterans-announce-banjo-kazooie-successor
There is no final name, right now as Project Ukelele (lol).
