Played nearly 60 hours now, including a restart about 15 hours in. I have two thoughts I want to share:
- The role-playing stuff, i.e. the events, is absolutely fucking great. I don’t know how other games don’t have this. They need it. It doesn’t have to be done like this, but it’s so good and so roleplaying-game-y.
I’m particularly impressed because they actually let you use class abilities and specially talented companions in this stuff! I mean god knows I love ME, but you pretty much never (absolutely never?) got to use your biotic abilities, or sniper skills, or whatever in a conversation or situation, just in combat.
Whereas in these RP events, I’ve used abilities me and other characters have - for example, my crew got sick, I healed them, everyone was happy! I needed to scare some monsters, Aloth had a spell for that. Someone needed pulling out of a hole, here comes muscle-y old Eder (there is one place where you can’t use him which is super-dumb but we will overlook that). And so on. It’s just the ol’ use rope & grapnel or crowbar of PoE1.
I think even more of them might be nice and there are kind of so many rope and grapnels and other tools that whenever you need those, you have them, so they might want to think about re-working that aspect if they do a PoE3.
- It really is too easy.
I know, I know you’re probably in the first 5 or 10 or even 20 hours and going “Is LexW on crack?”. But seriously it gets easier as things go on, and whilst there are still somewhat tough encounters from time to time, Veteran, which consistently challenged me in PoE1, is generally fairly trivial, with me not having to blow Empowers or anything. And I hear PotD is not much harder.
This will be rebalanced, according to Sawyer, the deprioritized it to get the game fun, working, and low-bug (which it is, it’s got some bugs but far fewer than most CRPGs launch with, it’s certainly not “buggy Obsidian game”. I’ve had one lockup in 60 hours, which is I suspect the least I’ve had in any CRPG except ME2/3 (which literally have never crashed on ME - ME1 crashed ALL THE DAMN TIME though on PC, at least for the first year or two, if you clicked through text too fast - and too fast was a pretty slow rate!).
Also the “scale everything” works now but a lot of encounters scale to a max of +4 levels, which means if, say, they were an L6 encounter to start with, and you’re L13, they’ll only be L10 and thus fairly trivial. There’s a mod for this but I’m surprised they had a “scale everything” option and limited it to so tightly. Not saying they were wrong too but…
