Is it ok to reply within your nightmare? Sorry it’s a bit off-topic, I just wanted to chime in about The Void.
I played it many years ago, once, and completed it. Never replayed it since. But I absolutely loved it. Such a unique game like nothing else I had played before or since. Great atmosphere indeed, very surreal, grim, and hopeless like Pathologic. And fantastic soundtrack and visuals that contribute much to the atmosphere.
I’m surprised you had so much trouble with crashes, as I don’t remember encountering any technical issue. The game is difficult though, as it’s easy to fall into a downward spiral from which one cannot recover. It took me two attempts to complete it. On my second attempt I had to rely on a walktrough/guide because while the game is kind of open-world/open-ended, one needs to visit areas and accomplish goals in more optimal orders than others if one hopes to make it to the end, and the manual doesn’t explain some of the more subtle color mechanics that are important (e.g. for boss fights). Despite broadly following the guide it was still a delighful, but difficult, experience and I could still make interesting choices on my own.
According to the developers, Ice-Pick Lodge, the original Russian version (titled Tension) was not as difficult. The game was then re-balanced at the request of the publisher (circa 2009) of the EU+US version. There is an unofficial patch/mod to make the game easier, but I hadn’t tried it.
Anyway, I would encourage you to give it another try if you feel like it and push further assuming you can resolve the technical issues. For others reading this and curious about it, maybe watch a playthrough. Or dive right in, but like Pathologic, be prepared to get lost, confused, and ultimately amazed or frustrated.
